The Matrix Model at MCT

Matrix is the perfect model for an outpatient intensive approach in ourmountain community. It is evidence-based… based on scientific advances inunderstanding addiction and brain chemistry as well as the experience ofthousands of clients.
- Michael Beavers, CEO, Mountain Counseling and Training, Inc.

What is the Matrix Model?
The Matrix Model is a comprehensive, organized set of evidence-based therapeutic interventions delivered in an outpatient setting. The Matrix Model incorporates techniques and concepts in a structured format that includes individual and group sessions for clients and family members.

What Does “Evidence-Based” mean?
Evidence-based treatments have research to support that they are effective in helping people in their recovery from addiction to substances, alcohol or processes (e.g. gambling).

Why Does It Work?
The Matrix Model at Mountain Counseling and Training, Inc.(MCT) is delivered in a warm, caring, and challenging environment. The program guides clients through real-life situations, giving them the skills and understanding to stop the addictive behavior. The Matrix Model has been refined over 25years and has helped thousands of substance users and their families. Clients attend conveniently scheduled appointments over a period of time sufficient to establish a strong foundation for continuing recovery.
MCT’s version of the Matrix model includes “added value” items to reduce relapse risk and increase treatment engagement—Examples include fact sheets and technology tools utilizing smart phones and tablets.

What does the Matrix Model Include?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – including RelapsePrevention (RP)
Information and thoughts have an effect on our emotions and behavior. If we change the way we think, we can feel better and behave differently. Cognitive behavioral techniques that emphasize the important role of thinking in how we feel and what we do are utilized throughout the MCT treatment process. Clients discover how to identify events that precede alcohol addictive behavior and how to change their thoughts and behaviors in response to these events. Clients also discover skills to assist them in stopping addictive behavior, preventing relapse, and living an addiction-free life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)
Motivation Interviewing is an innovative style of therapy that is designed to respect clients while supporting their forward movement and healthy changes. This non-confrontational, flexible and accepting style is a hallmark of the Matrix Model of treatment and it creates a nurturing relationship in which clients can thrive and successfully heal.

Twelve Step Facilitation
Research findings support involvement in Twelve Step recovery activities to improve treatment outcomes. An important element of treatment at MCT includes introducing clients to Twelve Step and other spiritual approaches to recovery. Options we support include: Women in Sobriety, Smart Recovery, and CelebrateRecovery. Support groups are a recommended adjunct to the MCT Matrix approach but are not a requirement.

Family Involvement
The involvement and attitudes of family members and significant friends can either enhance or interfere with the recovery process. The more families understand the process of addiction and recovery, the more helpful they can be in the recovery process. Research indicates superior treatment outcomes for clients whose families were involved in the treatment process.

Education
The Matrix Program was founded on the principle that scientific findings can be successfully presented to clients and their families. The Matrix education groups contain a unique set of lectures that explain to participants what happens when addiction occurs and how they can deal with the brain chemistry changes that are caused by the addictive behavior.

Contingency Management (CM)
Reinforcing positive behaviors during treatment has been shown to be highly effective in achieving a variety of addiction treatment goals. The Matrix Model incorporates incentives into its program by rewarding alcohol- and drug-free test results, attendance at treatment sessions, the use of skills learned during group, and the accomplishment of other goals during treatment.

Continuing Care
Clients are encouraged to attend continuing care groups at MCT for at least one year, although many may choose to stay longer. Those individuals that stay connected by attending the continuing care groups have a better chance of achieving long-term recovery.

Confidential Assessment
A confidential assessment interview is conducted to determine the best possible treatment plan for each individual. A recommendation may be made for direct admission into theMCT outpatient treatment program or the individual may be referred for medical detoxification, partial hospitalization, inpatient or residential care.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What makes the Matrix Model different from other programs?
No other evidence-based program for addictive behavior approaches the rigorous studies supporting the Matrix Model. The authors of the Model are the leading authorities on meth and stimulants treatment in the U.S. The revision which is reflected in the MCT Matrix Model takes into account the special needs of the alcohol abuser as well. The Model includes five clinical areas:
A family component

Urine testing

Relapse prevention

Early recovery

Ongoing follow-up

Unlike programs that were developed in university settings, theMatrix Model was developed through actual work with patients in a community clinic setting.

What is the background on this treatment?
The Matrix Model development was founded by a NationalInstitute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) grant in the mid-1980’s. It has over25 years of research and utilization. It is the only specific treatment program model endorsed by NIDA as a scientifically-based approach in Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment: A Research-Based Guide.

Why is family involvement important?
In spite of the fact that research continuously shows that treatment is more effective when families are involved, most outpatient treatment fails to provide a component for families. One of the authors of the Matrix Model is a family therapist and the program incorporates family system basics in simple, easy-to-apply handouts. The President/CEO of Mountain Counseling andTraining, Inc. is also a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist(LMFT) and is committed to incorporating family systems, principles ,and concepts throughout the program.

What does the MCT Matrix Program cost?

During MCT’s pilot program, the monthly rate is $750, for a total of $3,000 for the entire program.

Who does the MCT Matrix Program help?
